Democracy has failed us! Ben's Blog

It is time to admit, democracy has failed us! Since 1990 we have decreased our reliance on fossil fuels from 87% of global energy use, to 83%. A 4% drop in 30 years. Not good enough! At this rate it will be down to 79% by 2050. It will take 900 years to reach zero!

This is because bad actors are manipulating democracy, yet we keep believing in the system. Here in Australia the Labor party governs federally and in every state except Tasmania. There has never been such a golden opportunity for them to implement effective climate policy. They no longer have the excuse that they would be rejected at the ballot box if they did. So I for one, am bitterly disappointed that they have not banned all fossil fuel production immediately. They are not even discussing fazing it out. Quite the contrary, they espouse a vision of a big Australia, built on cheap energy. Yes, they will increase our renewable energy. This will service our commensurate increase in economic growth, whilst our fossil fuel use continues to chug along as usual, reducing slightly over the decades.

Forget about democracy tackling climate collapse. It will not happen!

The only way to tackle the problem, as we all know, is by reducing GDP, and no government in the world is going to do that, simply because the entire capitalist system would collapse. So it is up to us to reduce our own GDP. Basically, earn less money. Every dollar we earn creates emissions. We must begin to do things for free. The more we do for free, the less money folks need, so the more time they have to also do things for free, until eventually almost all our essential services are provided free of charge, because all the essential workers are being looked after free of charge. It is called the caring/sharing economy.

Holding true to his mission to make music for lovers and over thinkers, Didirris uninhibited lyrics tug at raw nerves, while his charming melodies soothe hearts and minds.

Caught in the Act is a labour of love during the lockdown periods in Australia. I have put so much of myself into these songs and really dedicated my heart to this album, Didirri says.

Earlier cuts from Caught In The Act, including Begin Again, Obsolete Machine and You Know Whats Good For You have been spun at community radio, added to double j and ABC, and received widespread playlisting across Apple Music, Spotify and Amazon, as well as receiving praise from the likes of NME, MILKY and Happy Mag.

Didirris previous releases, 2020s Sold for Sale EP and 2018s Measurements EP, culminated in sold out tours locally and abroad, and breathtaking performances at Splendour In The Grass, The Great Escape, Latitude and Primavera Sound. Last year, Didirri continued to captivate audiences, completing an 11-date solo tour, a national theatre run supporting Kate Miller Heidke, and slew of UK dates including The Great Escape.

With some 20 studio albums, 14 EPs, five live albums, six compilation albums and 22 singles behind them most released on their own A Records the band is nothing if not prolific. Since taking shape in San Fransisco in the early 90, The Brian Jonestown Massacre has built a reputation as a staple of the scene.

Their most recent release, The Future Is Your Past, came out in February this year and received praise from critics. The bands previous release, 2022s Fire Doesnt Grow On Trees, sprung up from an intense period for Newcombe as the artist wrote one song a day for 70 days during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bringing together elements of kaleidoscopic rock and droning shoegaze with an experimental edge, the music that emerged from this period just added to the rich discography that makes up the legend of The Brian Jonestown Massacre.

Since coming out of the pandemic, the band has toured throughout the US and Europe. Theyre all set to bring their mesmerising show down under this summer.

Tickets to see The Brian Jonestown Massacre will go on sale on July 6. Get yours here.

Where Am I Now? is taken from Leah Seniors new album The Music That I Make (out August 18 / Poison City Records), and is out everywhere now.

Cycling through vulnerable meditations on what it means to create, The Music That I Make shows Leah Senior at her most intimate, transporting listeners to her sandstone shack in Anglesea where old world folk meets late night AM radio.

Across the album, she moves away from the springtime baroque pop featured on The Passing Scene (2020) and into deep hearted, masterful songwriting with her confessional lyrics and intimate vocals centre stage. Its opener, also the albums title track, could just as easily soundtrack a Saturday morning coffee at home as a late night melancholic moment; Clearest View her cryptic hippie protest song showcases crystalline harmonies, while on The Fig she recalls a friend who regretted giving her best years to pursuing a career in music. Calling in inspirations from The Bell Jar to poems by Emily Dickinson, Leah Senior muses on writing...

Guitar icon Ian Moss announces new album Rivers Run Dry and headline tour "IndyWatch Feed Melbourne.food"

Ian Moss is a national treasure. His monumental work with Cold Chisel, partnered with his brilliantly fruitful solo career, has been embedded into Australian culture.

Still etching his name into the Australian music industry, Moss returns now with his forthcoming eighth studio album, Rivers Run Dry, and the Rivers Run Dry Tour in August through Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney and Perth. The tour will see Moss performing songs from the new album and the songs that have made Mossy one of the most captivating musicians on the planet.

Friday, 11 August 2023: Palais Theatre, St Kilda VIC

Saturday, 12 August 2023: Enmore Theatre, Sydney NSW

The album, Rivers Run Dry, is due for release on Friday, 21 July 2023 and features 12 songs and largely recorded over ten days at Rancom St Studios in Sydney. Rivers Run Dry is a musical feast once more displaying Mossys well-documented guitar-playing genius and a voice that floats like a butterfly and yet can pack the punch of a Mallee bull. Either way, it is unforgettable.

Co-produced by Ian and Brent Clark, who also engineered the album, it was recorded with the core band of Zoe Hauptman Bass (Neil Finn, Paul Kelly, Missy Higgins), Clayton Doley Keys (Joe Bonamassa, Jimmy Barnes) and Kerry Jacobson Drums (Dragon, Mondo Rock) with special guests Julian Moss sharing vocals on the Stevie Wonder classic Blame it On the Sun, and multiple award-winning songwriter and recording artist, Kasey Chambers, on the roots inspired Bury Me.

The song selection for Rivers Run Dry was focused on simply finding good songs, regardless of the style or genre they may have initially presented, and the result is an album that covers straight-ahead rock, Latin, funk, country, blues & unapologetic pop and yet we still ended up with an album that sounds very cohesive, Moss says.

I dont think any of us feel we have any What the fuck is that song doing on this album? moments.

Rivers Run Dry is released on Friday, 21 July 2023 through Universal Music Australia. General public tickets go on sale at 9.00am (local times) on Thursday, 4 May 2023 from here.

Due for release in August, Hey Dawn is a rich character study, with the singer-songwriter reflecting on the stories that have shaped her and those around her. Its also a more sonically diverse outing than Lumsdens previous records, incorporating elements such as guitar-based indie-pop into her trademark world of gorgeously crafted, emotionally rich acoustic songwriting.

I wanted it to feel good, I wanted to have fun, she smiles. I didnt want to think too hard about it I just wanted to feel.

Hey Dawn is, in short, Lumsdens most complete offering to date. But it took a while to get there.

Following the release of Fallow, Lumsden spent an exhausting 18 months navigating the logistical nightmare of touring in a time of COVID-related border closures and show cancellations. When combined with the residual trauma of the 2020 bushfires that nearly claimed her property in the Snowy Valleys region of New South Wales I literally drove out to Tamworth while the side of the road was still burning the desire to write music temporarily deserted her.

When it finally returned it did so on the coast of Western Australia, as Lumsden and her husband (and bandmate) Dan Freeman navi...

There will be retrospectives, interviews, live recordings from the MAINfm archives, Australian themed-shows and more.

There is no doubt there will be a lot of exciting home-grown radio to go around. As our listeners know, we already have two dedicated Australian Music programs (Live & Local and Hot to Trot) and have committed to work towards a quota of 30% Australian Music across our programming.

Off the Contour #25 A holistic future or will Jeremy Clarkson be proved correct? "IndyWatch Feed Food"

Monday 6th January 2020,
Darren J. Doherty, CPAg (AIA),
Castlemaine, Victoria, Australia

The fire season here in SE Australia has some months to run and has so far proved to be unprecedented on a number of levels. Will the enormity of this latest conflagration actually result in large scale landscape management practice change or is this in fact a sign of this continents rejection of its European cultural management?

A quick application of the Savory Institutes Holistic Management Frameworks Context Checks (see attached diagram from the Savory Institute) shows that these mega fires and the response to their control is a management failure on a whole number of levels social, biological and financial.

Source: https://www.savory.global/

When it comes to management the responsibility lays with the individual land manager/owner to start with.

People have fundamental array of management decisions to make which are often not taken in reference to the place they may live largely out of a profound lack of ecoliteracy.

It also is with various crown authorities and departments, both federal and state when it comes to their lands and their laws and to the smallest extent, local government and their lands and laws.

Im guessing that out of all of this there will be a series of state and federal inquiries, maybe even a federal royal commission and that if it is the latter its terms of reference will not include climate change factors as this federal government/parliament is too polarised on that issue to have the maturity to include it. GREAT/GRANT NEWS FOR MAINfm! 94.9 MAINfm

THURSDAY 21 NOVEMBER

We have been the recipient of some fantastic news from the Community Broadcasting Foundation this week, in the form of two content grants. These grants are for two very program series The Card-Carrying Members of the Library Liberation Front and Turning the Goldfields Green.

The Card-Carrying Members of the Library Liberation Front is a ten-part podcast and radio series uncovering the human stories of connection that people make through libraries, from young mums and the elderly, marginalised teenagers and refugees, to prison Dads who record themselves reading books to their children while incarcerated.

Turning the Goldfields Green  is a one hour weekly radio program and podcast; interviewing people, groups, businesses and institutions about their activities, efforts and solutions to the climate crisis. Working in partnership with the Mount Alexander Sustainability Group (MASG), this program will investigate what is happening locally (Central Victoria) and how that is reflected globally.

Congratulations to everyone who worked hard on obtaining these grants!
