A wave of flames Natural Newstead

At this time of year birding tends to be a case of feast or famine.

A walk in the Muckleford Bush last week was producing lean pickings, Painted Button-quail and Chestnut-rumped Heathwrens calling, but remaining hidden in the Cassinia and Gold-dust Wattle.

Then as I headed for home a wave of small birds appeared around me, moving at various heights through a patch of open woodland. They proved to be Flame Robins, perhaps twenty birds in total, a mix of brilliant adult males and brown birds either adult females or immatures. Interestingly I never see any birds in obvious transition (from immature to adult male) plumage, so it may be that all brown birds are adult females bit of a puzzle!

My first local observations for the autumn, they have been seen in the district for a week two now by other observers. The only Petroica robin to form flocks they are altitudinal migrants, spending the winter in the box-ironbark country and further north on the riverine plains, before heading back to areas such as Daylesford and Trentham to breed.

This flock was clearly heading purposefully north, feeding from low perches along the way. We can expect to enjoy many encounters with this enchanting bird over coming weeks.

Change is about how to keep surviving and fighting even when it feels like were going backwards, says Cable Ties guitarist and lead vocalist Jenny McKechnie.

It contrasts the traumatisation of victim/survivors by the so-called justice system with the solidarity and hope I have found talking to mothers, friends and strangers, who have connected with the songs Ive screamed into the abyss.

Guitar icon Ian Moss announces new album Rivers Run Dry and headline tour "IndyWatch Feed Melbourne.arts"

Ian Moss is a national treasure. His monumental work with Cold Chisel, partnered with his brilliantly fruitful solo career, has been embedded into Australian culture.

Still etching his name into the Australian music industry, Moss returns now with his forthcoming eighth studio album, Rivers Run Dry, and the Rivers Run Dry Tour in August through Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney and Perth. The tour will see Moss performing songs from the new album and the songs that have made Mossy one of the most captivating musicians on the planet.

Ian Moss Rivers Run Dry Tour

Saturday, 5 August 2023: The Tivoli, Brisbane QLD

Friday, 11 August 2023: Palais Theatre, St Kilda VIC

Saturday, 12 August 2023: Enmore Theatre, Sydney NSW

Friday, 18 August 2023: The Regal Theatre, Perth WA

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

The album, Rivers Run Dry, is due for release on Friday, 21 July 2023 and features 12 songs and largely recorded over ten days at Rancom St Studios in Sydney. Rivers Run Dry is a musical feast once more displaying Mossys well-documented guitar-playing genius and a voice that floats like a butterfly and yet can pack the punch of a Mallee bull. Either way, it is unforgettable.

Co-produced by Ian and Brent Clark, who also engineered the album, it was recorded with the core band of Zoe Hauptman Bass (Neil Finn, Paul Kelly, Missy Higgins), Clayton Doley Keys (Joe Bonamassa, Jimmy Barnes) and Kerry Jacobson Drums (Dragon, Mondo Rock) with special guests Julian Moss sharing vocals on the Stevie Wonder classic Blame it On the Sun, and multiple award-winning songwriter and recording artist, Kasey Chambers, on the roots inspired Bury Me.

The song selection for Rivers Run Dry was focused on simply finding good songs, regardless of the style or genre they may have initially presented, and the result is an album that covers straight-ahead rock, Latin, funk, country, blues & unapologetic pop and yet we still ended up with an album that sounds very cohesive, Moss says.

I dont think any of us feel we have any What the fuck is that song doing on this album? moments.

Rivers Run Dry is released on Friday, 21 July 2023 through Universal Music Australia. General public tickets go on sale at 9.00am (local times) on Thursday, 4 May 2023 from here.

Due for release in August, Hey Dawn is a rich character study, with the singer-songwriter reflecting on the stories that have shaped her and those around her. Its also a more sonically diverse outing than Lumsdens previous records, incorporating elements such as guitar-based indie-pop into her trademark world of gorgeously crafted, emotionally rich acoustic songwriting.

I wanted it to feel good, I wanted to have fun, she smiles. I didnt want to think too hard about it I just wanted to feel.

Hey Dawn is, in short, Lumsdens most complete offering to date. But it took a while to get there.

Following the release of Fallow, Lumsden spent an exhausting 18 months navigating the logistical nightmare of touring in a time of COVID-related border closures and show cancellations. When combined with the residual trauma of the 2020 bushfires that nearly claimed her property in the Snowy Valleys region of New South Wales I literally drove out to Tamworth while the side of the road was still burning the desire to write music temporarily deserted her.

When it finally returned it did so on the coast of Western Australia, as Lumsden and her husband (and bandmate) Dan Freeman navi...

Squeezing out the Zest!  The Music Makers adding flavour to the Murray Mallee "IndyWatch Feed Vic"
