Congress Suddenly Wants to Know If US Taxpayers Were Helping El Chapo "IndyWatch Feed National"

After flying under the radar for years, the case of Genaro Garca Luna is finally raising alarms in Congress, with one of the Senate's top Republicans demanding answers about how Mexico's highest-ranking cop was able to partner with DEA and FBI, "at the time that he funneled roughly 103,000 pounds of cocaine into the United States" for the Sinaloa Cartel. Garca Luna became the most senior Mexican law enforcement official ever convicted of narco-corruption when a Brooklyn federal jury delivered a unanimous guilty verdict on a five-count indictment that charged him with taking massive bribes to enable cartel drug smuggling, kidnappings, and murders while he was in office from 2001 to 2012. Garca Luna's position involved close collaboration with U.S. anti-narcotics agencies that operate in Mexico, and it gave him discretion over the spending of hundreds of millions in American tax dollars delivered as security aid. That money was supposed to go toward fighting the cartels, but his trial showed he was leaking sensitive intelligence, protecting drug shipments, and disrupting efforts to capture ... cartel leaders. On Feb. 22, a day after the guilty verdict, Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley sent a letter to the heads of the DEA and FBI asking what the agencies knew about Garca Luna and when, and demanding evidence ... that could shed new light on the relationship. In short, Grassley wants to know if American tax dollars were being sent to Mexico while the DEA and FBI were tolerating Garca Luna's corruption.

Note: This case adds to the evidence that the War on Drugs is a trillion dollar failure. For more along these lines, see concise summaries of deeply revealing news articles on government corruption from reliable major media sources.

Whats the Difference Between a Draftsperson and Architect? "IndyWatch Feed National"

Architects and draftspeople work in the same field and often on the same projects. However, the skills they have and the services they provide can differ greatly. If youre considering a building, renovation or extension project, its important to work out whether you need an architect or a draftsperson.

To help you decide, were going to have a look at some of the differences between the two roles.

Education and Licensing for Architects

Architect

To become an architect in Australia, you must complete a recognised architecture degree. Most architecture programs are five years in length and result in a Bachelor of Architecture, although some programs may be longer and result in a Master of Architecture degree. The degree must be accredited by the Architects Accreditation Council of Australia (AACA).

In addition to completing a recognised architecture degree, architects must also gain practical experience through an internship or similar program. The AACA requires candidates to complete a minimum of two years of practical experience working under the supervision of a registered architect.

Once qualified, you must register with the AACA and the relevant state or territory registration board before you can practise as an architect. Registration requirements vary by state or territory, but generally include completion of a recognised architecture degree, practical experience, and completion of a professional practice examination.

Continuing professional development (CPD) is also a requirement for architects to maintain their registration. CPD can include attending seminars, workshops, or courses related to the architecture profession.

Education and Licensing for Draftspeople

Draft Person

Educational and licensing requirements for draftspeople are quite different to those of architects. In Australia, a...

What You Need to Know About Replacing Your Carpet "IndyWatch Feed National"

Are you tired of looking at your old, worn-out carpet? Are you noticing that its starting to lose its cushion? If so, then it might be time for a carpet replacement.

For many, replacing the carpet can seem like a complex and overwhelming task. However, with the right information, preparation and perhaps a little help from professionals, your carpet can regain its lustre in no time.

In this blog post we will discuss whats involved in replacing your carpet. We will cover topics such as cost considerations, choosing materials, methods of cleaning your subfloor, the process of laying down new carpet and so on.

Without further ado, heres what you need to know about carpet replacement.

Signs That You Need to Replace Your Carpet

  • Lack of cushion and support
As carpets age, they tend to lose their softness and cushioning. This can make walking on them uncomfortable, which in turn, can put stress on your knees and back.
  • Matting and wear
Over time, your carpet fibres may become worn and matte, especially in high-traffic areas. This can make your carpet look old and shabby, even if its only a few years old.
  • Stains and discoloration
Carpet fibres can trap dirt and dust. Additionally, it can also absorb stains that are difficult to remove with regular cleaning. Over time, these stains may become deeply embedded in the fibres, making it harder and harder to restore the original look of the carpet.
  • Unpleasant odours
If you notice a musty or unpleasant smell coming from your carpet, its likely that mould or bacteria are lurking within. This can be harmful to your health and can even cause respiratory issues if left unaddressed.
  • Allergies and irritants
As carpets age, they can harbour allergens, such as dust mites, pet dander and pollen. All of these can trigger serious allergic reactions in some people. If youre noticing increased allergy symptoms or respiratory issues, it may be time for a carpet replacement.

Costs Associated with Replacing Carpet

The cost of replacing a carpet can vary based on several factors, including the amount of material needed, the type of carpet, and the cost of your chosen carpet underlay.

The cost of carpet materials can range from $20 per square metre to over $200 per square metre. Less expensive materials include polyester and olefin, which are popular for their durability, while nylon and wool carpets are among the most expensive options due to their high quality and softness. Its important to choose a carpet that suits your budget and your lifestyle, as well as your homes decor.

Colombia: Scientists explore remote seamounts to protect hammerhead sharks "IndyWatch Feed National"

In 1995, when Colombia protected the island of Malpelo by setting up the Malpelo Fauna and Flora Sanctuary, the area had a recorded 43 species of crustaceans, six species of starfish, and 70 species of fish. These figures, the only ones available, were from 1972, when the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute led its first expedition to the island. Over time, scientists carried out more expeditions, and the number of recorded species grew. By 2016, the National Natural Parks System of Colombia had cataloged 1,500 animal species in the area. Nine of them are not found in any other part of the world and about 40 species are threatened or vulnerable, according to a parks system press release. Yet a large part of the life cycle and the ecology of some of these species remained unknown, especially for migratory species like the scalloped hammerhead shark (Sphyrna lewini), which visits the island frequently. For example, no one knew the routes by which the sharks in this population move through the sea, how deep they swim, where else they congregate, the locations of all their breeding areas, or their relationships with other populations of scalloped hammerheads. Today, after more than 20 years of work, researchers from the Malpelo and Other Marine Ecosystems Foundation, a Colombian NGO, have found answers to some of these questions. United within a strategic ecosystem Malpelo Island is Colombias westernmost point, located about 500 kilometers (310 miles) off the Pacific port city of Buenaventura. Husband duo Mister Cos infectious Make You Feel Alright is a flirty, funk-fuelled love song "IndyWatch Feed Vic"

Off the back of their entirely romantic debut single, eclectic husband duo Mister Co has asserted their presence as a powerhouse deserving of our undivided attention with their next feel-good love track.

Released on 28 April, Make You Feel Alright is the infectious second single from Mister Co.

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

The joint project of two passionate musicians and producers Connor and Oscar Absolum, Mister Co debuted just last year, treating the world with the intoxicatingly romantic single Tonight.

Surpassing 45,000 streams in under two months of release, the debut single laid a firm foundation for the duos genre-blended sound and style, bringing Oscars big band and musical theatre influences together with Connors love of anthem rock, soul and pop, but its on this follow-up that Mister Cos talents as a songwriter, vocalist and producer all shine their brightest.

From start to finish of the three-minute and 44-second track, Make You Feel Alright proves an irresistibly radiant listening experience, surging with bold and bright retro, blues and soul influences.

The soulful and full-bodied harmonies set the tone, with the duos golden voices soaring sweetly over a tapestry of big drums, big horns, a groovy bass line and a memorable simple chorus melody.

Channelling the ecstasy of love and all it encompasses into a sweet, seductive sound, Make You Feel Alright is a funky and slick, strikingly stunning throwback to the cinematic funk, soul and pop of the 60s and 70s, with an irresistible breakdown and some classic sounding brass sections that feel like a fresh take on the sounds of the yesteryear. Its a groovy track that immediately gets stuck in your head and doesnt come out easily.

Mister Cos funky and flirty sophomore single was spawned in the throes of Melbournes lockdown as an attempt to lift each other up and bring each other joy.

After staring at the walls for months in lockdown we both felt incredibly deflated and down in the dumps, Mister Co explains.

Perthes Warns of Negative Impact of Khartoum Fighting on Darfur Region

A picture released by activist on 25 November showing a village burning in Jebel Moon Area of West Darfur

April 25, 2023 (KHARTOUM) UN special envoy to Sudan sounded an alarm bell of the negative impact of the fighting in Khartoum on the rest of the country, citing the resumption of tribal clashes in West Darfur as one area of concern.

Volker Perthes, on Tuesday, briefed the 15-member council for the second time about the situation in Sudan after the eruption of war in Khartoum between the national army and the Rapid Support Forces on April 15.

Perthes reviewed the security situation in Sudan and said that the Darfur region is the most affected by the hostilities in Khartoum pointing to North, South and West Darfur states.

He said a ceasefire brokered by the state authorities ended tribal fighting in North Darfur, while initiatives partially stopped the fighting in some localities of South Darfur but continued in the state capital Nyala.

Perthes underscored that the fighting between the national army and the paramilitary forces which originate from Darfur resumed in El Geneina near the Chadian border on Tuesday with increased involvement of tribal components.

He went further to speak about reports of mobilization by some tribes and some armed groups stressing that this escalation could draw in Sudans neighbouring countries.

I renew my call on all communities to maintain their neutrality and refrain from taking sides, Perthes urged.

The West Darfur State witnessed recurrent clashes between the Arab and Massalit tribes during the past three years.

A senior West Darfur state government official told Sudan Tribune that The clashes in El Geneina between the army and the RSF have turned into tribal conflicts between Arab and African groups.

The fighting began on Monday when gunmen believed to be affiliated with the Sudanese Alliance Forces, led by State Governor Khamis Abdallah, attacked the command of the RSF Sector in El Genein...

Premiere: Melbournes Georgia Ray spins heartbreak into buoyant indie pop with Hypnotherapy "IndyWatch Feed Vic"

The first thing to know about Georgia Ray is that shes just as infectiously bright and inspiring as her music. Based in Melbourne, the singer-songwriter embraces authenticity in her songs, telling her raw stories of heartbreak, loss and hope.

Bringing together a mix of indie, pop and country influences to create a new and unique sound, Ray has released a string of catchy, cathartic singles that has seen her recognised by the Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI) as One to Watch. Now after spending the majority of the last couple of years writing songs and recording home demos, shes embarking on her most ambitious project yet, and the result is nothing but spectacular.

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

An exhilarating indie pop-rock upheaval, Georgia Ray arrives today with her new release Hypnotherapy.

Released on 28 April, Hypnotherapy is Rays first release of 2023 and the direct follow-up to last years duet ballad, Picture of Us.

A burst of buoyant indie pop brimming with light and tender feeling, Hypnotherapy is a resounding triumph for Georgia Ray, seeing her move in an all-encompassing direction of upbeat, catchy pop-rock.

Laced with irresistible pop-rock hooks and infectious sounds, influences such as Avril Lavigne, Taylor Swift and Paramore surge within the release with Rays big, punchy chorus and crisp electric guitars. The result is a vibrant and pop-fuelled three-minute journey that greets the ears as not just a simple song but as an enveloping and enjoyable immersive listening experience.

I listen to a lot of pop and pop-rock artists such as Avril Lavigne, Taylor Swift and Pale Waves, and I love the energy their songs have and the way they can pick you up, Ray explains.

I wanted to write a song that excites me in that same kind of way, and I also really wanted this song to be poppy and upbeat to counteract the opposite nature of the lyrics. I wrote this song while living alone amid a Melbourne lockdown too, so I think I was really needing some stimulation!

Sonically, its vibrant and infectious. Yet lyrically, it is surprisingly mellow. In Hypnotherapy, Ray delves into her own experiences.

Offering a full spectrum of flavours, forms, styles, and techniques, Geelong home baker Angela Sumners leaves precious little to be desired. Creating flawless mouth-watering homemade slices and sweets, Angelas business Sugar & Slice is an indulgent deep dive into nostalgia.

With an affinity for home baking and a mighty sweet tooth, Angela was previously working in an office where she would often bring in homemade treats for her colleagues. With serious words of encouragement from her co-workers and her husband, the mother of three quickly realised that her passion lay in food. It was at this moment that Sugar & Slice was born.

I started taking in some homemade slices (Mars & Crunchie I had been making for years) but experimented with Jelly, Turkish Delight and Lemon as well, Angela explains.

Turns out they all loved them and suggested I started making them to sell. But surely, I couldnt do that? Thats when hubby agreed that I should look into getting my kitchen council registered and starting up a business.

Keep up with the latest food and booze news across the region here.

That was back in 2019. In just a few years, Angela has taken her passion for baking from strength to strength, garnering a bounty of loyal followers and firming placing her at the forefront of home bakers absolutely slaying it in Geelong right now thanks to her perfectly curated boxes of tasty, bite-sized slices.

I am absolutely blown away that this mum of three has started a business as a side hustle, and now has a thriving company with so many exciting changes and opportunities coming up.

The level of service, the superior products and an amazing brand reputation is what sets us apart from the rest! Our wonderful and supportive customers, the amazing feedback and reviews we get, reaffirms the hard work and dedication we have put into Sugar & Slice over the last few years.

...

After 18 years, Central Geelong Park and Ride shuttle bus service is being canned "IndyWatch Feed Vic"

In another hit to the Geelong region, the Central Geelong Park and Ride shuttle bus service is being discontinued.

The service, which has been operating since 2005, was deemed no longer financially viable following a review into operating costs and reduced passenger numbers.

Stay up to date with whats happening in and around the region here.

The review found that the program is running at just a four per cent occupancy. The service has the capacity to move 1,500 passengers each day but is averaging around 73 daily or 1,517 passengers a month so far this year. Last year, an average of just 1,421 people used the service each month.

Its believed the COVID-19 pandemic and a trend towards working from home is what has affected patronage, with passengers dropping to an average of 802 and 854 per month in 2020 and 2021 respectively. Passenger numbers are still under 50 per cent of pre-pandemic numbers.

Running every 10 minutes in the morning and evening peaks on weekdays between Upper Hearne Parade, Eastern Park and three locations in central Geelong, the park and ride service has been wholly outsourced for the last five years. The fixed cost to run the service, regardless of the number of passengers, means that a $3 ticket costs the community $33.68.

For those that used the park and ride service, there are two similar bus routes 32 and 60 that commuters can use instead.

Passengers will be notified that final shuttles will be run on Friday 19 May.

The draft Central Geelong Parking Strategy, which aims to manage the current and future demand for parking, will be available for community and stakeholder feedback soon.

Guitar icon Ian Moss announces new album Rivers Run Dry and headline tour "IndyWatch Feed Cvic"

Ian Moss is a national treasure. His monumental work with Cold Chisel, partnered with his brilliantly fruitful solo career, has been embedded into Australian culture.

Still etching his name into the Australian music industry, Moss returns now with his forthcoming eighth studio album, Rivers Run Dry, and the Rivers Run Dry Tour in August through Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney and Perth. The tour will see Moss performing songs from the new album and the songs that have made Mossy one of the most captivating musicians on the planet.

Friday, 11 August 2023: Palais Theatre, St Kilda VIC

Saturday, 12 August 2023: Enmore Theatre, Sydney NSW

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

The album, Rivers Run Dry, is due for release on Friday, 21 July 2023 and features 12 songs and largely recorded over ten days at Rancom St Studios in Sydney. Rivers Run Dry is a musical feast once more displaying Mossys well-documented guitar-playing genius and a voice that floats like a butterfly and yet can pack the punch of a Mallee bull. Either way, it is unforgettable.

Co-produced by Ian and Brent Clark, who also engineered the album, it was recorded with the core band of Zoe Hauptman Bass (Neil Finn, Paul Kelly, Missy Higgins), Clayton Doley Keys (Joe Bonamassa, Jimmy Barnes) and Kerry Jacobson Drums (Dragon, Mondo Rock) with special guests Julian Moss sharing vocals on the Stevie Wonder classic Blame it On the Sun, and multiple award-winning songwriter and recording artist, Kasey Chambers, on the roots inspired Bury Me.

The song selection for Rivers Run Dry was focused on simply finding good songs, regardless of the style or genre they may have initially presented, and the result is an album that covers straight-ahead rock, Latin, funk, country, blues & unapologetic pop and yet we still ended up with an album that sounds very cohesive, Moss says.

I dont think any of us feel we have any What the fuck is that song doing on this album? moments.

Rivers Run Dry is released on Friday, 21 July 2023 through Universal Music Australia. General public tickets go on sale at 9.00am (local times) on Thursday, 4 May 2023 from here.

Due for release in August, Hey Dawn is a rich character study, with the singer-songwriter reflecting on the stories that have shaped her and those around her. Its also a more sonically diverse outing than Lumsdens previous records, incorporating elements such as guitar-based indie-pop into her trademark world of gorgeously crafted, emotionally rich acoustic songwriting.

I wanted it to feel good, I wanted to have fun, she smiles. I didnt want to think too hard about it I just wanted to feel.

Hey Dawn is, in short, Lumsdens most complete offering to date. But it took a while to get there.

Following the release of Fallow, Lumsden spent an exhausting 18 months navigating the logistical nightmare of touring in a time of COVID-related border closures and show cancellations. When combined with the residual trauma of the 2020 bushfires that nearly claimed her property in the Snowy Valleys region of New South Wales I literally drove out to Tamworth while the side of the road was still burning the desire to write music temporarily deserted her.

When it finally returned it did so on the coast of Western Australia, as Lumsden and her husband (and bandmate) Dan Freeman navi...

New Bendigo exhibition calls for photo submissions of The Australian Womens Weekly Childrens Birthday Cakes "IndyWatch Feed Cvic"

43 years ago, one of the greatest books ever to be published landed in the hands of parents across the country, becoming a stalwart in households, frustrating parents and revolutionising the childhood party culture.

With its retro cover featuring the iconic red and blue choo-choo train cake, The Australian Womens Weeklys Childrens Birthday Cake Book became ingrained in the upbringing of Aussie children, encompassing the pictures and instructions for dozens of birthday cakes that required just boxed cake mix, pre-made icing and a packet or two of lollies.

Stay up to date with whats happening within the regions art scene here

From the figure-8 shaped racetrack, the piano, Dolly Varden, and the cricket bat, to the meringue castle, duck featuring chips, Miss Piggy and of course the swimming pool, featuring green jelly, typically Aeroplane Jelly, this glorious creation featured more than 100 cakes modelled after everything us kids could ever dream of. Flicking through those pages and picking out a cake for your birthday each and every year was a rite of passage for most 80s and 90s kids (sorry Mum).

The World Is A Vampire festival brought guitar wizardry and the magic of Smashing Pumpkins to Ballarat "IndyWatch Feed Cvic"

By day Kryal Castle is a family amusement park; a time machine transporting visitors to medieval times to witness thrilling jousting tournaments and daring sword fights from knights in shining armor, to get lost in the hedged maze labyrinth and to watch Princess Merida-level archery.

Sitting atop of Leigh Creek overlooking the gold-mining town of Ballarat, Kryal Castles magic by day becomes a haunting setting of Dracula proportions by night; fit for the synonymous offering of The World is a Vampire Tour, led by Count Corgan.

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

As we ascended the winding road to the castle gates, we were slightly disappointed that the lair was not open, but instead, the castle foreground was transformed into the festival site. Alas, a striking setting for a rockshow.

Very on-brand to the festival setting, Sydney septet Battlesnake serpentined their way through a piercing-prog set as the first command. Fellow Sydney-siders, RedHook as led by the ferocious Emmy Mack, joined the frontline merely days after the release of debut album Postcard From A Living Hell. They slaughtered the crowd with tracks Bad Decisions Cure 4 Psycho and Imposter, donning nurse outfits and straitjackets. Females continued to the front with the animalistic energy of Amyl and the Sniffers, delivering all of their hard-hitting tracks including Security, Guided By Angels, Knifey and Hertz.

Three stellar sets from local musicians all waving the flag for rock and metal in our country with two veteran international bands to come; what more could you want? Definitely not pro-wrestling. With Billy Corgan shifting his gaze to the pro-wrestling promotion game, The World Is A Vampire show became a hybrid music platform and pro-wrestling ring. Lets not sugar-coat; it was weird, awkwardly received and off-putting.
